About the Philippines

The Philippines is an island nation located in Southeast Asia, consisting of approximately 7,600 islands. Its capital is Manila, and its population is around 115 million. Having been under Spanish and then American rule for many years, the Philippines is one of the few Asian countries that uses English as an official language due to its colonial past. Today, the Philippines has become an attractive destination, particularly for students seeking language education, due to its affordable cost of living, warm climate, and widespread use of English.
Known for its tropical nature, white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and natural beauty, the country also attracts global interest with its tourist regions such as Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, and Bohol.
Economy
The Philippine economy is based on the service sector, call centres (BPO), tourism, agriculture and foreign currency transfers. Thanks to its large young population who speak English, the country hosts numerous call centres and operational offices for international companies. This ensures that the level of English is quite high in everyday life.
With the increase in foreign investment in recent years, the Philippines has become an important player among developing economies.
Climate
The Philippines has a tropical climate. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year. Average temperatures range from 25–32°C. There are two main seasons in the country:
Rainy season: June – October
Dry season: November – May
December–April are particularly ideal months for both education and living.
Safety
In general, the Philippines is a moderately safe country for students and foreigners. It is recommended to take basic safety precautions in large cities and crowded areas. Areas where schools and student accommodation are located are generally controlled and safe. As long as local rules are followed and caution is exercised, the likelihood of serious problems is low.
Accommodation Options
The most common types of accommodation for students in the Philippines are as follows:
Homestay:
This is the most advantageous option for students who wish to practise their language skills. It is frequently chosen because it includes breakfast and dinner, is safe, and is economical.
Student Hostels/Residences:
These are usually located close to schools. Single or shared rooms are available. They are more expensive than homestays but offer a more independent lifestyle.
The cost of living is quite low compared to many countries.
Working in the Philippines
Students studying language courses do not have legal work permits. Therefore, the Philippines is mainly preferred by students who want to improve their English level and are looking for affordable education.
Language Schools and Education
The Philippines is recognised as one of Asia’s most popular English language education centres. Its most significant advantage is the widespread use of one-to-one tuition. This allows students to practise speaking English much more quickly and effectively.
Key advantages:
Affordable school and living costs
Intensive one-to-one tuition opportunities
Widespread use of English in daily life
Rapid acquisition of speaking practice
Tropical and social lifestyle
The most popular cities include Cebu, Manila, Baguio and Clark. Cebu is one of the most popular locations in terms of both educational quality and social life.
Filipino Culture and Lifestyle
Filipinos are generally cheerful, helpful and hospitable. Family ties are strong and social relationships play an important role in daily life. A mixture of Western and Asian cultures prevails.
Due to the large Christian population, the cultural structure is closer to that of European countries. People are warm towards foreigners and communication is quite easy. Music, dance and festivals are important parts of social life.
The slow pace of life, low stress levels and a lifestyle close to nature make the Philippines particularly advantageous for students travelling abroad for the first time in terms of adaptation.
