About Malta

Malta is a small island nation located in the southern Mediterranean Sea with a population of approximately 600,000. Throughout history, its strategic location has placed it under the rule of many great empires and states, resulting in a rich historical and cultural heritage. When traveling around the country, the large cathedrals, historical buildings, and houses with unique architecture give the feeling of walking through an open-air museum.

Tourism and language education are the two most important sources of income for Malta’s economy. The country welcomes an average of 2 million tourists during the summer months and also offers English language education to students from many countries around the world throughout the year. It has a very diverse student profile, ranging from Japan to Brazil, South Korea to European countries. English is one of the official languages of Malta due to its history as a former British colony. Maltese is also the country’s main language and has a mixed structure influenced by Arabic, Italian, French, and English. Malta’s membership in the European Union (2004) and its use of the Euro as its currency are also factors that make the country attractive.

Malta has a typical Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cooler and rainy. The summer season generally begins in mid-April and lasts until the end of November. June–September is the period when heat and humidity are most intense. Despite being an island nation, it does not have a tropical climate. Light rainfall occurs during the winter months, and warm clothing is recommended for visits after November.

In terms of safety, Malta is a very peaceful and safe country. Security measures are high, especially due to the large number of tourists and students. It is possible to walk comfortably on the streets even at night; however, as in any country, it is advisable to take basic safety precautions.

Malta is an important center for students who want to study languages. There are many language schools in the country to suit every budget and need. Language courses are usually offered as a package with accommodation. In addition to standard courses of an average of 20 hours per week, there are also intensive programs of 30-36 hours. Students take a placement test on the first day and are placed in the appropriate class based on the results. Although being placed in a class below the expected level at the beginning can be discouraging, it is possible to move up to a higher level in a short time depending on performance. Each level lasts an average of 6–8 weeks. In addition to general English, special courses such as Business English, IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, and EAP are also offered.

Accommodation options are generally dormitories or homestays. Dormitory accommodation is in an apartment-style system, where students share a common kitchen, living room, and bathrooms. This system offers advantages in terms of socializing and practicing English. In homestays, breakfast and dinner are provided by the family; students have the opportunity to practice English constantly in daily life. However, it is important to comply with the family rules.

In terms of transportation, accommodations are often within walking distance of schools. For students who wish to use public transportation, the Talinja Card is recommended; this card provides unlimited travel at an affordable price.

Work and job opportunities are available for students studying languages in Malta. Since 2018, language school students have been granted permission to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. The hourly wage generally ranges from €5 to €7, and an average monthly income of around €400 can be earned. Part-time jobs are more likely to be found in the café, restaurant, and service sectors. Earnings may be higher in tip-based industries; however, students are advised not to base all their plans on working.

In terms of culture and lifestyle, Malta has a unique structure where Arab and European influences intertwine. The majority of the population is Catholic, and the concept of family is very strong. Family gatherings, large meals, and social relationships play an important role in Maltese life. The standard of living is quite high, creating a peaceful, safe, and enjoyable living environment in the country.

In summary, Malta is an extremely attractive country for students seeking language education, offering affordable English language training, a safe lifestyle, a rich history, a Mediterranean climate, opportunities for socializing, and the advantages of being part of the European Union.
