About Ireland

Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and the twentieth largest in the world, located west of England. Its capital is Dublin, and the Irish Sea forms its border with England. The country’s official language is English, and it is approximately a 5-hour flight from Turkey.
Over the past 10 years, it has become an important educational destination, especially for students wishing to learn English. The most popular cities for language education are Dublin, Drogheda, and Cork.
Economically, Ireland has come to be known as “Europe’s Silicon Valley” over the past 15 years as global technology giants have chosen the country as their headquarters. Technology companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, PayPal, and Intel, as well as major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, operate in the country. The main reason for this is the significant tax advantages offered by the government. In addition, the finance, services, education, and tourism sectors are also important sources of income for the country’s economy. Ireland is a member of the European Union and its currency is the Euro.
In terms of climate, Ireland has a temperate oceanic climate. While temperatures in the summer months generally range between 14–16 degrees Celsius, winters are quite mild, with temperatures around 4–7 degrees Celsius. Weather conditions can change frequently, mainly due to the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to the North Atlantic Current, the country does not experience extreme heat or severe cold despite its latitude. The average annual temperature is slightly above 10 degrees Celsius.
In terms of safety, Ireland is one of the countries with the lowest crime rates in Europe. However, as in any country, students are advised to take basic safety precautions and comply with the country’s social norms.
Accommodation options are generally divided into two categories: homestays and dormitories. Homestays are with reliable families that have been accredited by the Department of Education and carefully selected by schools. Students’ specific preferences (such as not wanting a family with children or no pets) are largely taken into account when notified in advance. Most students stay with a host family for the first 4 weeks, which helps them adapt more easily to both the country and the culture. Breakfast and dinner are included in this accommodation. Students can then move to shared apartments. Weekly room rates average between €140 and €260. In dormitory accommodation, meals are generally not included, rooms can be single or double, and weekly rates are around €160–260. As accommodation supply in Ireland is limited, it is very important to arrange the first 4 weeks of accommodation before the visa stage.
Work opportunities are one of the most important factors that make Ireland attractive to students. Students enrolled in language courses of 25 weeks or longer can legally work up to 20 hours per week; during vacation periods, they are entitled to work up to 40 hours per week. Hourly wages average around 10–12 Euros, and this income can largely cover students’ living expenses. After entering the country, it is mandatory to register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau to obtain a GNIB card. Students usually work in the service sector, such as restaurants, cafes, hotels, and markets. Those with a lower language level can start with jobs that require less communication. In addition, the Work & Study program can be extended for up to approximately 2 years.
The job search process is conducted both through online career sites and by submitting CVs in person. Jobs.ie, Indeed.ie, and Irishjobs.ie are the most frequently used platforms. In addition, it is quite common to submit CVs directly to markets, cafes, and restaurants. One of the fastest ways to find a job is to build a strong social network.
Ireland has become quite popular among Turkish and international students in recent years when it comes to language schools. Affordable education and living costs, along with legal work permits, are the main reasons for this popularity. The quality of education exceeds global standards. Additionally, the multinational student body allows students to get accustomed to different accents, which is a significant advantage. Standard courses average 20–24 hours per week, while intensive programs can extend this to 30–36 hours. Students can choose between daytime or evening classes. Classes are determined based on the results of a placement test taken on the first day, and each level lasts an average of 6–8 weeks. In addition to general English, specialized courses such as Business English, IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge are also offered.
In terms of culture and lifestyle, Ireland is known for its warm, kind, and hospitable people. Respect, order, and politeness are highly valued in social life. It is a natural part of daily life for people to greet each other on the street, on public transport, or in shops. At first, this may seem different to students accustomed to Turkish culture; however, as they adapt, both the language learning process accelerates and life becomes more enjoyable. It is important not to be afraid of making mistakes when speaking English, because the local people are aware that students are in the country to learn the language and are usually willing to help.
In summary, Ireland is a very attractive country for students who want to learn English and gain international experience, thanks to its safe environment, high-quality language education, legal work opportunities, warm people, and strong economy.
