About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a country located in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south, with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. With a population of approximately 5.2 million, Costa Rica is one of the most notable countries in the region due to its political stability, natural beauty, and commitment to environmental protection. Its capital is San José.
The country is known for being one of the few states without an army; it completely abolished its military in 1948 and redirected its resources to education, health, and environmental protection. This has made Costa Rica one of the safest and most livable countries in Latin America. The “Pura Vida” (Pure Life) philosophy is the most important concept that sums up the Costa Ricans’ approach to life, and a peaceful, balanced lifestyle prevails in the country.
Costa Rica is a natural paradise with its rainforests, volcanoes, national parks, tropical beaches, and biological diversity. It is home to approximately 5% of the world’s biological diversity.
Economy
The Costa Rican economy is based on agriculture, tourism, the service sector, and the rapidly developing technology and software sectors in recent years. Bananas, coffee, pineapples, and cocoa are among the country’s most important agricultural products. Costa Rican coffee, in particular, is renowned worldwide.
Tourism is one of the strongest drivers of the country’s economy. Ecotourism, nature sports, surfing, yoga, and wellness tourism are highly developed. In addition, regional offices of multinational technology companies (such as Intel, HP, and IBM) operate in Costa Rica.
Thanks to its economic stability, low corruption rate, and investor-friendly policies, the country is considered one of the strongest economies in Central America.
Climate
Costa Rica has a tropical climate. Temperatures range from 22–30°C throughout the year. There are two main seasons in the country:
Dry season: December – April
Rainy season: May – November
During the rainy season, nature is extremely vibrant and green. While coastal areas have a hot and humid climate, the capital San José and its surroundings have a cooler and milder climate. Thanks to its climate, Costa Rica is a favorable country to live and study in throughout the year.
Security
Costa Rica ranks among the safest countries in Latin America. The absence of a military, a strong police force, and an established legal system contribute to the country’s secure environment.
It is generally a safe country for students and foreigners. As long as basic safety rules are followed in major cities and tourist areas, serious problems are unlikely. The country stands out for its peaceful nature and hospitable people.
Accommodation Options
The most common type of accommodation for students in Costa Rica is homestay. This option is both economical and offers a great opportunity to practice Spanish. Host families are usually selected and monitored by schools.
Other alternatives include:
Shared student houses
Studio apartments
Student residences
Accommodation costs vary depending on the city and region, but are more affordable compared to the UK and the US.
Working in Costa Rica
Students studying languages in Costa Rica do not have the legal right to work. However, under certain conditions, work permits can be obtained for long-term education and different types of visas. For this reason, the country is preferred more for education and life experience.
Language Schools and Education
Costa Rica is one of the world’s most popular destinations for students wishing to learn Spanish. It is a great advantage that it has one of the “cleanest and most understandable” Spanish accents in Latin America.
Language schools generally offer small classes, individual attention, and practice-oriented education. The educational process includes:
Intensive Spanish programs
One-on-one lessons
Volunteer projects
Cultural and nature activities
Cities such as San José, Tamarindo, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio are the most popular educational destinations.
Costa Rican Culture and Lifestyle
Costa Ricans (Ticos) are extremely warm, calm, and helpful people. Their outlook on life is not stressful, but balanced and focused on happiness. The “Pura Vida” philosophy represents taking things slow, enjoying life, and valuing small pleasures.
Family ties are strong, and social relationships are important. Living in harmony with nature is an integral part of the culture. Surfing, yoga, trekking, nature walks, and water activities are part of daily life.
A simple, peaceful lifestyle, free from ostentation, prevails. In this regard, Costa Rica offers a unique experience in terms of both education and personal development.
